Working Toward Wellness

Taking good care of your body is key to growing older and staying healthy. Here’s a list of 10 reasonable goals designed to bring balance to your body, mind and soul.

1. If you smoke, quit. It’s never too late to benefit from quitting–no matter what your age or smoking history. Many people who quit smoking are surprised by how good they feel.

2. Don’t misuse alcohol or other drugs. Be aware that alcohol may affect you differently as you age. It may also interact dangerously with medicines you take. Drinking too much—on a single occasion or over time—can have serious consequences for your health. Alcohol abuse can damage organs, weaken the immune system, and contribute to cancers.

3. Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity is important at any age. It’s a good way to improve overall health and relieve stress. And it can help reduce some of the negative effects of aging. It can also help you get fit and lose weight. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. Consult with your health care provider before starting an exercise program.

4. Eat a healthy balanced diet. Include a variety of foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Limit fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars (in foods and beverages). Checking the Nutrition Facts label on foods can help.

5. Get plenty of rest. Your goal is to wake each morning feeling refreshed.

6. Manage stress. When you take steps to manage stress, you help protect yourself from serious health problems like heart disease and depression. Managing stress can help you: sleep better; control your weight; get sick less often and heal faster; lessen neck and back pain; be in a better mood; and get along better with family and friends.

7. Give the gift of service and help to others. If you can, volunteer. There are many ways to get involved.

8. Enjoy life more. It’s an important step to a happier and healthier you. Get out and try something new or take up a new hobby. Or simply spend more time with family and friends.

9. Make sure that you get all recommended health tests and screenings that might and can save your life. These include: blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, hearing and vision screening, and colorectal cancer screening. It is important to have a health care provider that you can call for an illness or injury, checkups, shots or immunizations, prescription medicines, a referral to a specialist, and advice about any health problem.

10. Be prepared to care for minor injuries and illnesses at home by having a first-aid kit or well-stocked medicine cabinet. Inspect your home for safety hazards regularly. With just a little effort and planning, you can help prevent many injuries at home.
