Do Men Go through Menopause?

Whether or not men go through a well-defined menopause is what the medical community is currently debating; only a small number of aging men have male menopause. Some doctors call this problem androgen (testosterone) decline in the aging male, but it is also caused by conditions such as diabetes. It is also called andropause, a hormonal and neurological cascade that affects men’s health and their personality. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, depression, and sexual problems (these symptoms can be overlooked or relegated to “getting older”).

A doctor can perform a physical exam and ask about symptoms to make the diagnosis. He or she may order diagnostic tests to rule out any medical problems that may be contributing to the condition. A series of blood tests, which may include measuring testosterone level, will be ordered; that will help determine the best course of action.

If test results confirm that testosterone levels are low, testosterone replacement therapy is recommended. It may help relieve such symptoms as depression, fatigue, and loss of interest in sex. Testosterone replacement therapy has potential risks and side effects so one has to talk to his doctor to learn more (replacing testosterone may worsen prostate cancer, for example). The doctor may recommend a new diet or exercise program, or other medications, such as antidepressant, to alleviate some of the symptoms of male menopause.

Male adults should be in charge of their own health by watching what they eat, ensuring that they get enough physical activity, and enjoying life; these are measures to maintain good health. Studies have shown that the most common cause of andropause is chronic stress caused by high-carbohydrate diets and poor lifestyle habits; blood sugar imbalances can cause low testosterone so a diet that is consistently high in starchy and sugary foods should be avoided. Participating in a planned exercise program is helpful. Aside from the physical and health benefits that exercise offers, it encourages social contact, and decreases anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

Consider these keys to successful aging: practice pleasurable activities; view life as meaningful; maintain a positive self-image; accept responsibility for the past; be optimistic; and remain motivated to maintain or expand intellectual capacity.
