Are You Having Breathing Problems?

Any change in an older person’s ability to breathe requires immediate attention. This is necessary to find out whether your breathing problems are mild or more serious.

Seniors are at increased risk for lung infections because the body’s defenses weaken with aging. The other signs of lung problems include: coughing, excess mucus production, coughing up blood, chest pain, and loss of ability to be physically active. There are conditions that can affect breathing; they are: allergic reactions; anxiety; lung infections, such as colds, flu and pneumonia; and chronic illnesses, such as asthma and COPD or heart failure. Seek emergency help if you: have difficulty breathing, have bluish lips or skin, cough up blood, or have sudden chest pain.

Lung infections in older adults are more likely to develop into a more serious condition. To protect the lungs, there are things that you can do. If you smoke, you need to stop smoking and to stay away from others who smoke. Quitting smoking is the most important way to minimize the effect of aging on the lungs. I recommend exercise (approved by your physician) and good overall fitness which can improve breathing capacity, even in the elderly. Even if you feel tired, you need to be out of bed as much as possible.

Take steps to prevent lung infections, such as getting enough sleep, eating a variety of healthy foods everyday, drinking plenty of fluids, practicing hand hygiene, and staying away from people who are ill. Using a humidifier to keep air moist and reducing indoor air pollution can help strengthen your lung health, too. Getting an annual seasonal flu shot and a shot to protect against pneumococcal disease helps; these diseases can be life-threatening for older adults.

A greater understanding of your breathing problems, and an accurate medical diagnosis and effective treatment, can help you lead an active and productive life.
